Diary Entry 01 [video]

[John is standing near his new "house", fiddling with his bracelet. He's taken everything he's heard and let it sink in before finally seeing what this bracelet can do. He's familiar enough with smartphones and webcams that he gets the hang of it fairly quickly.

His eyes glance over his shoulder to Loki house, then back to the camera. He gives his audience a charming smile]

Can someone please explain to me why Loki's colors have to be orange? I know we serve under the god of mischief, but do we have to look so tacky doing it?

[Another nods. That's not surprising, since Stefan's last memory of John is not the same as hers. She can only imagine how that conversation is going/went.]

Damon...isn't going to know who you are until we tell him. [When, not if. She's not going to be able to keep it a secret.] Like I said, time is weird here.

[Her lips press together, her heart clenches.]

Jeremy gave it to me. [On what might have been the worst day of her life. She can only think of a couple others that could even compare.] I read it.

That's going to be a pain in the ass. Can you tell him to not kill me on sight? I don't have my ring here.

[of course John could probably make it easier on himself by not provoking Damon, but we all know that's not going to happen.

On hearing she read the letter, he nods and manages a smile]

I meant what I said. Whatever happened after the spell took effect, I still love you.

At least he really doesn't have a reason to? As long as you don't give him one, anyway. [Yeah, she's not seeing that happening.] For what it's worth, he's not any stronger than you here. Just beware of flying books.

[He's essentially human, except for the blood thing. And the telepathy.]

I...I know. [She tries to conjure up a smile too.] But I was still human when I woke up.

[so it's true that people lose their supernatural powers. That's interesting, and very helpful. The playing field will never be even, but at least the more average people have a fighting chance.

When Elena says she was human, John's eyes widen. He can't completely mask the relief he feels hearing those words]

That's good. But what do you mean, "was"? Did you still change into a vampire later? It's... [this is hard for him to say] it's all right if you did. Just tell me.

[They even have their own powers, though Elena rarely uses hers unless it's absolutely necessary.]

No, no, I still am. That hasn't changed. It's just...

[It's something she rarely talks about around here. Stefan and Damon don't even know.]

I was in another car accident. It's the last thing I remember before I woke up here. I don't know what's going to happen if I ever go back home.

[She doesn't think she'll survive, given the circumstances, but she doesn't want to elaborate on them.]

[John's expression grows stony. He doesn't like the thought of Elena dying so young]

Did you have a good senior year, at least?

[Yeah, that was kind of the reaction she was expecting.]

I made the best of it that I could.

[She did the things seniors were supposed to do, on top of all the supernatural awful. But no, it wasn't the senior year she'd wanted, and she hadn't even gotten to the winter. It had been more about holding her and Jeremy and her friends together and trying to keep them alive.]

Look I'm...in the Loki Welcome Hall right now. Did you want to, I don't know, meet up? Talk in person?

Yes, I would like that. I'll be seeing you in person soon, Elena.

[he gives her an awkward sort of smile before cutting off his video]

[Unluckily for Elena, as she tried to leave, a certain Salvatore brother had been waiting for her. So when she heads down into the foyer, she has another person in tow, one that John is very likely not going to be happy to see.

If it helps, she looks a little pissed, having tried to convince him that she wasn't going anywhere important, which was clearly a lie given that he'd overheard the very tail end of their conversations.

Sorry John, she tried.]

[ It's time like these when he more than misses having that keen sense of hearing. Damon's a little confused about who Elena was having that video call with, but it's clearly someone from home. Why else would she mention that bit about the car accident. ]

Who are we meeting? [ Damon lets out a slight pout, not too happy about welcoming another person from Mystic Falls; Stefan's here -- that's enough for now. He takes one quick look around the hall, not seeing a familiar face except from some skinny blond nobody. ]

I'm guessing it's not your annoying brother.

[oh, it's always a joy seeing the older Salvatore brother. Not really, but John knows how to behave. Though he probably won't since Damon conveniently doesn't know anything about him. When he sees the former vampire, John gives him a smile]

No, just her estranged uncle. My name's John.

We're not meeting anyone. I am and you're annoyingly following me around.

[Pout all you want, Damon, she almost got away with not dealing with this little meeting and getting to do it on her own. She sighs as she gives John a sympathetic and awkward smile.]

Sorry. [He'd get it, at least.] John, Damon. Damon, John.

Estranged uncle? [ He narrows his eyes at John for a good few seconds. ] Looks like they'll take just about anyone. Tell me we're not going to be uncle-sitting. [ He takes a step toward the man. ] You a Gilbert?

[John takes this with confidence and ease, offering his hand to Damon]

I am. A Founding family, just like you, Damon.

We have a complicated relationship.

[To Damon. Also that's a huge understatement.]

But he's family.

Ooh. A complicated relationship. Just like the one we've got going. [ He folds his arms across his chest and gives Elena a cheeky grin before returning his attention to the newcomer. ]

Welcome to Asgard, Uncle John. [ Definitely wondering about what the guy knows about, well -- everything ever, but he'll wait to ask Elena about it later. ]

Thank you, Damon. This isn't really where I expected to end up, but I can't really complain. Not when I have such familiar faces greeting me.

[Wow, she's going to totally ignore that comment, Damon. Because it's totally true. But shut up.]

You might change your mind about that the next time we get bombarded with fire giants.

[This place wasn't exactly...fun sometimes.]

[ Damon makes a face at the mention of fire giants. ] Let's not forget the frost giants and that time you went and got yourself killed in the fiery pits of almost hell. [ He shakes his head at John. ] It's a good thing you're here now to help keep an eye on your niece. Three pairs of eyes are better than two. [ And with Stefan getting a job, he won't be around all that much. ]

[John gives Elena a look. One of those looks that says "You are going to explain this to me in private later". Leave it to Damon to drop useful information. Thanks, bro]

I'll do my best.

[Wow you guys, she doesn't need babysitters. She turns a glare at Damon for even bringing that up, since she wasn't even really supposed to tell him any details, and he keeps blabbing about it.]

I don't know if either of you have noticed, but I'm fine.

[She already knows she's going to have some explaining to do, though. For both of them.]

She's so stubborn. [ Damon places an arm around Elena and gives her shoulder a bit of a squeeze. ]

Does that run in the family?

I'm afraid it does. You knock a Gilbert down and we get right back up again.

But at the moment, I'm more interested in hearing about Asgard than in talking about family history.

[Having died and come back three times now...yeah, that's completely accurate. She pushes at Damon's side, trying to give herself some space because she knows he's just doing that for show and it's obnoxious.]

Damon's actually been here quite a bit longer than I have, though I'm not sure how much he's been paying attention. Between the two of us, we could probably answer any questions you have.

[ Guess who's not loosening his grip on her because obnoxious can so very well be his middle name right now? ]

Well, I would have been paying more attention, but I've been a lot distracted lately. [ He gives Elena a cheeky little smile. ]

But yes, go ahead. Shoot. What do you want to know? If you're considering escape, I'll tell you right now that plenty have tried and failed.
