So, I trust we all had fun with our animal friends a week or so ago?

[Hey Asgardians, long time no see. Jacob smiles, looking amused in his new
sweater that was given to him, along with six other sets of winter clothing, due to the fact that he was nice to a sheep. Asgard you sure do surprise him sometimes.]

I've even seen a few sticking around...which makes me wonder, are they appreciated? Animals in human lives, I mean. I know most children nowadays want a cat or dog to keep them company, but parents would probably shirk at the thought of keeping a more unusual animal, like a snake or raccoon.

Which is interesting really...in Egyptian times, animals were great symbols of powerful deities who shaped the world they lived in. Most of them even had animal heads- Anubis, god of the dead and embalming, had the head of a black jackal. Thoth, god of writing and knowledge, had the head of an ibis, which is a type of bird. Horus, the god with the head of a hawk, Bastet, a protective goddess with the head of a cat...I could go on and on.

But it is interesting how animals, on my world, are not held as sacredly as they were back then- except for examples like the Hindu treating the cow with reverence and other such cases, most people would not look at an animal and think "that is something I need to pay respect to."

How is it in your worlds, I wonder? Are some animals held in higher respect than others? And for what reason? I know that even some worlds have mythical creatures like dragons and unicorns...are those even considered special in a place in which a person sees them in their regular habitat.

[A pause, as his smile widens.]

I'm curious, Asgard.

Of course they are!

... Well, most of them are. Like the bear on your sweater - bears are important back home.

That's really cute, by the way!

One of the old gods I worship is a bear.

Ah, I got something too! It isn't as nice, though....

It's not just Egyptian gods. Athena's sacred animal is an owl.

[ which she's, you know, pointing out casually. totally casually!! from the girl with the... owl earrings. ]

And Zeus has the eagle. Poseidon has horses. It's pretty common with gods.

[ well. colour her a little impressed, as a connoisseur of Greek mythology herself. ]

I always thought Hera looked a bit like a cow. [ heh. like Hera's here to complain about that insult. ] But that's true. Still, then you've got monsters like Cerberus and Echidna. It's not always a good thing.

[Gosh, you could totally have a pet in that situation.]

Perhaps, huh? Alright.

I believe they used to be more respected in past centuries, but as of today we either keep them as pets or just eat them for our survival. But there's also to consider that it may be considered highly immoral to eat specific animals, too.

[ She does like today's teachings, sensei. ]

... Maybe it's because of us humans' development through the centuries. Nowadays, people who still worship animals mostly do it out of tradition.

They're the mounts of the Dragon Horse Cavalry in the country I come from. They look like big lizards that walk on two legs.

It's good to see a post from you, Jacob! I guess you got the same gift as me. I have plenty of nice sweatervests, now.

As for respoecting animals, it's not as common in my world and time. Most animals I've been in contact with before coming here were small and suited for apartment life where I'd say they were more spoiled than respected.

I couldn't resist petting them - their wool really was the strangest thing I've ever touched, but really nice to pet.

It's the same in my world and time. It's pretty sad, really. I'll admit, though, I never gave it much if any thought until moving out of the city. I guess when you're surrounded by that many people it's hard to concentrate on other life outside of humanity.

Depends on your definition of "special." Dragons are fairly common where I'm from, as are unicorns, but it's not as though we keep them in our backyard. Most of us have owls, there there are a few who have cats...and even a few idiots who still keep toads for pets. [Here's looking at you, Longbottom.]

Still, unicorns are most definitely considered sacred. We use the hair from their tails for wand cores and the horns for potion materials, but it's the blood that's important. Dragons and phoenixes are also held in high regards for the same reasons.

The animals in my world are called Pokemon. Humans and Pokemon have worked together for ages. There are a lot of Pokemon who can shape the world in ways a human could never do alone. There are Pokemon who can change the weather, alter space, travel through time... [She pauses, having previously been bursting with adoration and excitement at getting to talk about her Pokemon, to consider.] Is treating animals with respect really that strange in other places?
